How Do You Write a Good Meta Description?
Under the blue headline of each Google result is a couple of lines of gray text. That is often the meta description: a short summary you write for each page. It does not decide your ranking, but it can decide whether someone clicks on you or on the business below you.
What it does
Think of it as a tiny advertisement. Searchers skim a list of results quickly, and the preview text helps them decide which one answers their question. A clear, specific description makes your result look more relevant and more trustworthy.
How long should it be
Aim for about 150 to 160 characters. Longer text tends to get cut off with dots at the end. Shorter is fine if it says what it needs to say.
What to include
- What the page offers, in plain words
- Your location, if you serve a specific area
- One reason to choose you, such as years of experience or fast response
- A gentle nudge to act, such as "Call for a free quote"
For example: "Family-owned roofing company serving Tampa for 20 years. Free inspections and written quotes. Call today to book a visit."
What to avoid
- Copying the same text onto every page. Each page needs its own
- Stuffing keywords. It reads badly and does not help
- Vague filler like "Welcome to our website, we offer many services"
- Empty promises you cannot back up
A note on rewrites
Google sometimes replaces your description with text it pulls from the page, especially when it thinks another passage fits the search better. That is normal. Writing a good one still gives you the best chance of controlling what people see, and the page itself needs clear text too.
Where it fits with your other basics
Your title tag is the headline, and the meta description is the supporting line. Together they form your search result. If you want to know whether people are actually clicking, Google Search Console shows how often your pages appear and how often they get clicked.
Start with your most important pages: the homepage, your main services and your contact page. A few good descriptions are worth more than a long list of weak ones.
