Do You Need a Video on Your Homepage?

A homepage video can be one of the most compelling things on a site, or one of the slowest and most skippable. The difference usually comes down to execution, not the idea itself.

When it genuinely helps

Businesses where seeing the work in motion tells a story words can't — a physical process, a finished space, a hands-on service — benefit the most. A short, well-shot clip can communicate more in ten seconds than a paragraph of copy.

The real cost: page speed

Video is one of the heaviest things you can add to a homepage. Done poorly — a large, unoptimized file autoplaying on load — it directly works against everything covered in keeping a site fast enough. A slow-loading hero video can cost more visitors than it wins over.

Doing it well

  • Keep it short — a few seconds on loop, not a full pitch someone has to sit through
  • Compress it properly, or use a lightweight format built for background video
  • Never rely on sound — most visitors will have it muted by default

A solid fallback

A few strong, real photographs — not stock — do most of the same visual work with none of the load-time risk. Video is worth the effort only when the story genuinely needs motion to land.
