Why Does Your Link Look Bad When Shared on Social Media?

4 min read · November 2, 2026

You paste your website link into a message or a social post, and what shows up is a bare web address, a blurry logo, or a photo that has nothing to do with your business. People judge a link before they click it, and a poor preview makes them hesitate.

This matters more than most owners expect. A link is often the first thing a potential customer sees, whether it comes from your own post, a group chat, or a friend recommending you.

Where the preview comes from

When you share a link, the app visits the page and looks for a few hidden details: a title, a short description and an image. Whoever built the site writes these into the page. If they are missing, the app guesses. It may grab the first image it finds, cut your text in the wrong place, or show nothing at all.

What usually goes wrong

  • No image at all, so the link looks plain and is easy to scroll past
  • The wrong image, such as an old logo or a picture from an unrelated page
  • A cropped image that cuts off your name or the important part
  • A title that reads simply Home, or a long title that gets chopped off
  • The same preview on every page, so a link to one service looks identical to a link to the home page

How to fix it

  • Give each important page its own title and a one or two sentence description. Our guides to title tags and meta descriptions explain how to write them
  • Use a clear share image, around 1200 by 630 pixels, with the important part in the middle, since different apps crop in different ways
  • Keep any text on the image large and short, because it often appears at thumbnail size
  • Choose a real photo or a branded graphic that fits the page, rather than a busy collage

If someone built your site for you, ask whether each page has its own preview details. If you use a website builder, look for settings labeled social sharing or share image in each page's options.

Do not confuse the share image with your site icon, the tiny symbol in the browser tab. They are two separate things. See what a favicon is.

Why the old preview keeps showing up

Apps save a copy of each preview so they do not have to fetch it every time. After you fix the details, the old version can linger for days. Many large platforms offer a free refresh tool where you paste the link and ask for a fresh copy. Messaging apps often have no such tool and simply need time.

Test before you share

Send the link to yourself in a few places: a messaging app, a draft social post, an email. Check it on a phone too. A couple of minutes of testing now spares you an awkward preview in front of customers, and it is worth repeating after any redesign.
