How Long Should It Take to Build a Small Business Website?

"It depends" is the honest answer, but it's not a very useful one when you're trying to plan around a launch date. Here's what actually stretches or shrinks a website timeline, and what's reasonable to expect.

What actually affects the timeline

• Scope. A single-page site with a phone number and a contact form is a very different project from a multi-page site with a service catalog, booking system, or online store.
• How fast you can provide content. Photos, logo files, service descriptions, and business details are often the biggest bottleneck — not the actual building. A designer waiting a week for your logo file adds a week to the timeline just as surely as a week of design work would.
• Revision rounds. Each round of feedback and changes adds time. That's normal and healthy, but a project with five vague rounds of "can you just make it feel more premium" will run longer than one with two focused rounds of specific feedback.

Realistic timelines

• Simple one-page site: around 1–2 weeks.
• Custom multi-page small business site: around 2–4 weeks.
• Sites with booking, e-commerce, or custom features: 4–8 weeks or more.

Signs a project is taking too long

A project running long isn't automatically a red flag — but a few patterns are worth watching for: long stretches of silence with no update, a timeline that keeps quietly slipping without an explanation, or a designer who's clearly juggling too many projects to give yours real attention. A reasonable designer will tell you upfront what could delay things and flag it early if something's slipping, rather than letting you find out on your own.
