How Do You Choose Keywords for a Local Business Website?
Keywords are the words and phrases people type into Google when they look for what you offer. Picking the right ones is less about technical tricks and more about thinking like your customers. For a local business, a handful of good phrases usually does more than a long list.
Start with your customers' words
You may call your service "mechanical systems installation." Your customers might type "AC repair near me." Use their language, not industry terms. A good way to find it:
- Ask recent customers how they searched for you
- Read your own reviews and enquiry emails for the words people use
- Listen to the questions people ask on the phone
Combine service and place
Most local searches have two parts: what you do and where. Build your main phrases from both, such as "wedding photographer in Portland" or "emergency electrician Tampa." Include the neighborhoods or towns you actually serve.
Use Google to find ideas
You do not need paid tools to begin:
- Type a service into Google and see what it suggests as you type
- Look at the "People also ask" boxes
- Check the related searches at the bottom of the results page
- Look at how nearby competitors describe the same service
Match each phrase to a page
Each important keyword should have a page that clearly fits it. Your main services deserve their own pages rather than one long page covering everything. If you serve several towns, see do you need a page per location. Think about what the person wants too, as explained in what search intent is.
Where to place them
Use your keywords naturally in the places that matter most:
- The title tag and the meta description
- The main headline and a few subheadings
- The first paragraph of the page
- The text of links pointing to the page
What to avoid
- Stuffing. Repeating a phrase over and over makes the page worse to read and does not help
- Chasing huge terms. Broad phrases are crowded. Specific ones are easier to win
- Guessing. Check what actually appears in search before committing
Keep it simple
Choose a short list of phrases for each main service, write clear pages around them, and review after a few months in Google Search Console. You will see which searches bring people to you and can build on those.
Good keyword choices are part of a strong local SEO foundation.
