Small Business Websites

Website vs. Just Using Instagram/Facebook: Does a Small Business Still Need a Website?

"I already post on Instagram, why do I need a website too?" It's a fair question, and for a lot of businesses social media genuinely does most of the heavy lifting. But there are a few specific things a website does that a social profile can't, and they're exactly the things that quietly cost businesses customers when they're missing.

What social media is genuinely good at

Instagram and Facebook are great for showing up in front of people who are already following you, sharing quick updates, and letting customers message you directly. If most of your business comes from repeat customers or word of mouth, a strong social presence covers a lot of ground.

What it can't do

  • Show up when someone searches Google. When someone types "plumber near me" or your city plus your service, Google is pulling from websites, not Instagram profiles. No website means you're invisible to that entire category of searcher — people actively looking to buy, right now.
  • You don't own it. Your account lives on someone else's platform, under someone else's rules. Algorithm changes, an account restriction, or a platform outage can cut off your only storefront overnight, with no backup.
  • Give people a place to actually decide. Scrolling through a feed isn't how most people compare businesses before choosing one. A website organizes your services, pricing, reviews, and contact info in one place someone can actually read through calmly, instead of hunting through old posts.
  • Build the same level of trust. Fair or not, a lot of people still associate "real business" with "has a website." A polished, professional site like J5 Beauty & Skincare does that trust-building work even for a business that already had a strong Instagram following.

The real answer: both, not either

This isn't really a competition. Social media is where you build relationships and stay visible to people who already know you. A website is where you get found by people who don't know you yet, and where everyone — new or existing — can actually get the information they need to decide to hire you. Businesses that rely on social alone aren't doing something wrong exactly, they're just leaving an entire category of customer on the table.
