What Is a Heatmap Tool, and What Does It Actually Show You?

4 min read · October 5, 2026

A heatmap lays a color overlay on your page: warm colors where lots of people click or tap, cool colors where they don't. It turns a vague question like "why isn't anyone using that button?" into something you can actually see.

What it can show you

  • Where people click and tap, including on things that aren't links
  • How far down the page visitors scroll before leaving
  • Whether the main button gets noticed or gets ignored
  • How mobile visitors behave compared to desktop ones

How it fits with analytics

Tools like Google Analytics tell you what happened: how many visitors, which pages. A heatmap tells you where on the page it happened. Together they help explain why a page isn't doing its job.

What it can't do

A heatmap shows behavior, not reasons. A cold button might be badly placed, or the offer might just not interest people. It also needs a decent amount of traffic before patterns are trustworthy.

A note on privacy

Some heatmap tools record sessions or interactions, which can touch on consent rules. Read the cookie consent explainer and make sure the tool hides what people type into forms.
