Small Business Websites
What Makes a Website Look "Professional" vs. "Homemade"?
It's rarely one obvious flaw that makes a site feel homemade. It's usually a handful of small things stacked together — and once you know what they are, they're easy to spot on any site, including your own.
Consistency, more than any single element
Spacing, fonts, and colors that repeat the same way across every page read as intentional. A site that looks like it was pieced together over several different sittings — a slightly different font here, spacing that doesn't quite line up there — reads as homemade, even if each individual piece looks fine on its own.
Restraint
Professional sites usually say less, with more breathing room around what they do say. Cramming in every available font, color, and animation is a common instinct, but it almost always reads as less polished, not more.
Real photos, used well
Stretched, blurry, or oddly cropped stock photos are one of the fastest tells. A handful of genuine, well-shot photos of the actual business almost always beats a dozen generic stock images of strangers.
Copy that sounds like a person, not a brochure
Overly formal "we pride ourselves on delivering excellence" language tends to say nothing at all. Plain language that actually answers the question a visitor showed up with reads as far more confident and professional. A site like J5 Beauty & Skincare leans on exactly this combination — consistent design, restraint, and real photography.
