Should Your Website Have a Dark Mode Option?
4 min read · October 12, 2026
Many phones and apps now offer a dark mode, with light text on a dark background. Some visitors even expect it. That raises a fair question for a business owner: should your website offer one too? For most local businesses the honest answer is that it is optional, and it usually comes after more important basics.
Why people like dark mode
Some people find it easier on the eyes in low light, and it can feel modern. Phones with certain screens may use slightly less battery with darker colors. A website can follow the visitor's device setting automatically, or give them a switch to choose.
What it really involves
Dark mode is not just inverting colors. A second color scheme means designing and testing the whole site twice:
- Text and backgrounds need strong contrast in both versions
- Your logo must look right on light and dark backgrounds
- Photos and graphics may need adjustments
- Buttons, links, forms and icons all need a second look
- Every future page or change needs to be checked in both modes
That extra work adds cost and can introduce small visual bugs if it is rushed.
When it makes sense
Dark mode is worth considering if:
- Your audience spends long periods reading on your site, such as in a content-heavy or tool-based site
- Your brand already leans dark, so a dark theme feels natural
- Many of your visitors use their phones at night
When to skip it
For a typical service business, customers visit briefly, look for what you do and how to contact you, then leave. In that case, a single well-designed theme is usually better than two average ones. Time is better spent on clear colors and fonts, a site that is easy to use on a phone, as covered in what mobile-friendly actually means, and readable text for everyone.
Readability first
Whether light or dark, what matters is that text is easy to read. Good contrast and a clean layout help every visitor, including those using assistive tools, as we discuss in what an accessibility statement is.
If you do add dark mode later, treat it as a finishing touch. Get the main site working beautifully first, then decide whether a second theme would actually help your customers.
