What Are Backlinks, and Do Local Businesses Need Them?

A backlink is simply a link from another website to yours. If a local newspaper mentions your business and links to your site, that is a backlink. Search engines treat these links like recommendations, and a website with good ones usually has an easier time ranking.

Why they matter

When a trusted website links to you, it signals that your business is real and worth visiting. A few links from respected, relevant sources are worth far more than many from random ones. Quality counts more than quantity.

Do local businesses really need them?

Yes, but you rarely need as many as a national brand. For local searches, a handful of genuine links from local sources can help set you apart from similar businesses. Your site still needs to be useful, clear and easy to use first. Links add to a good foundation. They do not replace it.

Where good local links come from

  • Local organizations. A chamber of commerce or trade association often lists members with a link
  • Suppliers and partners. Companies you work with may list you on their website
  • Sponsorships. A youth team or community event may thank sponsors online
  • Local press. A story about an opening, an award or a community project can earn a link
  • Customers and clients. A client who has a website may feature a project you completed together
  • Your own useful content. Helpful pages and guides are easier to link to than a plain brochure

What to avoid

  • Buying links. Search engines have rules against paid links meant to boost rankings, and the risk is not worth it
  • Link swaps with unrelated sites. They look unnatural
  • Spammy directories and comment links. They add little and can hurt
  • Promises of hundreds of links for a low price. These are almost always poor quality

Backlinks versus citations

They sound alike but they are different. A backlink is a link to your site. A citation is a mention of your business name, address and phone number, often in a directory. Both help local search, in different ways. We cover the second in what local citations are.

A practical starting point

Make a short list of five organizations, suppliers or partners who might reasonably link to you. Ask politely, give them what they need, and make sure your site is worth the visit. You can see the links you already have in Google Search Console.

Earning links is slow, steady work, which is why it fits alongside the broader picture in how long SEO takes.
