Business Websites

What Are Local Citations, and Do You Need Them?

A local citation is any place online that lists your business name, address and phone number. Think of business directories, review sites, maps, chamber of commerce pages and industry listings. They may or may not include a link to your website. What matters is that your details appear and are correct.

Why they matter

Search engines compare what different sources say about your business. When your name, address and phone number match everywhere, it adds confidence that you are real and located where you say. When they differ, it creates doubt and can hold back your local visibility.

The consistency rule

Minor differences count. "Street" in one place and "St." in another, an old phone number, a missing suite number or a former business name can all cause confusion. Pick one exact way to write your details and use it everywhere. This is often called your NAP: name, address, phone.

Which listings are worth it

Start with the ones that matter most:

  • Your Google Business Profile. This is the most important of all, as explained in why it matters as much as your website
  • Major map and search listings where customers look for businesses like yours
  • Review sites that are popular in your field
  • Industry-specific directories, such as those for trades, legal or health
  • Local organizations, such as your chamber of commerce or business association

You do not need hundreds. A modest number of accurate, relevant listings beats a long list of low-quality ones.

How to clean up what you have

  • Search for your business name and phone number and note every place it appears
  • Fix anything that is wrong or out of date
  • Close or merge duplicate listings
  • Update everything after any move, rename or phone change
  • Make sure your website footer and contact page match exactly

Citations are not the same as backlinks

A citation is a mention of your details. A backlink is a link to your site. Both help, in different ways, and you can read about the second in what backlinks are.

Part of a bigger picture

Citations support your local search presence, but they do not replace a clear, useful website. For the full picture, see what local SEO is and why it matters. A good habit is to review your listings once or twice a year so they never drift out of date.
